Ebbing Lautenbach, MD, MPH, MSCE earned a BS in Chemistry and Psychology at Calvin College followed by an MD and MPH at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He came to the University of Pennsylvania for residency in Internal Medicine, followed by a fellowship in Infectious Diseases during which time he also earned a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE). Dr. Lautenbach is the Robert Austrian Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases), with tenure, and Professor of Epidemiology, both in the Perelman School of Medicine at Penn. He serves as the Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Penn. He is also a Senior Scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB), a Fellow in the Institute on Aging, Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute on Health Economics, and a Senior Fellow at the Center for Public Health Initiatives, all at Penn. He serves as the Associate Director of the CCEB with oversight of training programs in epidemiology. Dr. Lautenbach’s research focuses on the clinical and molecular epidemiology of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens in acute care and post-acute care settings. His work has also focused on antimicrobial stewardship strategies to optimize antibiotic use, including the use to biomarkers to inform antibiotic use and the role of electronic algorithms in identifying and targeting inappropriate antibiotic use. Finally, his work explores the emergence of spread of MDRO pathogens in low and middle income countries. He has lectured extensively and has over 260 peer-reviewed publications in these areas. He has received numerous foundation, state and federal grants, including from NIH, CDC, and AHRQ, to support his research program. Dr. Lautenbach is a Fellow in the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), and the American College of Physicians (ACP). He is an elected member of the Philadelphia College of Physicians, the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), and the Association of American Physicians (AAP).
